- A chip, also called a silicon chip, due to its construction, is a
- semiconductor device which holds a complex electronic circuit. Chips are
- so called since part of their manufacturing process involves a wafer of
- silicon sliced (or "chipped") off a larger block. These devices can
- replace thousands or even millions of individual electronic components in
- a space smaller than a fingernail. Chips are usually embedded in a larger
- package, called a DIP, since their tiny size would make handling them
- impractical.
